A point is reached when the existing technologies cannot be adopted as is and thus giving rise to a new industrial revolution. The 1st industrial revolution happened with the advent of Mechanization, steam power and weaving loom. The 2nd industrial revolution consisted of mass production on assembly line and utilization of electrical energy. With the advent of integrated circuits, 3rd industrial revolution happened enabling robotics, automation, computers and electronics. In the timeline of our history, we are at the brink of 4th industrial revolution which is Digital Transformation leading to Industry 4.0 enabled by networking.
Industry 4.0 is a culmination of various technological advances including but not limited to Machine learning, Cloud computing, Internet of things, Cyber physical systems, digitization of sensors using nanotechnology, Advanced Robotics, Big Data, Machine collaboration, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Cyber security and 3D printing. Digital transformation of technology has impacted several areas including but not limited to Automotive, Aerospace, Robotics, Education, Textiles, Optics, Architecture, Industrial systems, Additive manufacturing, Electronics, Biotechnology and Polymers.
